Review: How long has it been since you have heard a
smart metal record that rivaled the likes of "Operation Mindcrime"? Look no
further metal fans, there is a band orchestrating some amazingly melodic metal
in 2004 and they are called Kamelot. Their CD Epica
(released in 2003) is one of the most textured and technically proficient metal
releases I have heard in years. A friend of mine recently introduced me to the
band and I suggest you take my friendly advice and listen to the sound that
these fine musicians have
developed throughout the late 90's and into the new millennium. I can't help
but compare the band to Dream Theatre and Queensryche, but Kamelot transcends
the 80's metal stigma, and seems to have the ability to re-introduce true
musical composition back into the rock world. Epica is a concept album that
avoids the typical pitfalls that go hand in hand with most concept CD's.
The music that makes up Epica is obviously equally as important as the ideas the
album is based on. Epica is not light listening, the lyrics explore inner
turmoil, the meaning of life, and even the "epicetre of the universe."
Thankfully the music is equally as multifaceted, so you can allow yourself to be
swept up in the sounds rather than over thinking the album. If you have not
heard Kamelot, and if you are the slightest bit inquisitive, give them a listen,
you will not be disappointed.
Favorite songs: Every song is enjoyable, although
some of the interludes did not seem necessary
Least favorite song: My only concern about the
album is that it could be perceived as taking itself too
seriously. Keep in mind, Kamelot is a very capable and serious band, and the
deliver.
